Summary: The loudest shout of the Lenten season is the earnest faith statement of the everyday believer. |
Summary: The circumstances of life and sometimes our own bad decisions may delay the purposes of God, but ultimately God’s calendar is never late. |
Summary: The story of Lazarus’ resurrection not only demonstrates the power of God, but also the perfection of God’s timing. When we’re in the midst of a crisis, it’s often difficult to see God’s hand at work. But he is there, nonetheless, working behind the scenes, suffering along with us, even though he sees how he’s going to redeem the situation down the road. |
Summary: Jesus’ lack of quick action upon learning of Lazarus’ serious illness is puzzling. But we don’t understand his worldview, which is much broader than ours. Looking at the difference in worldview between early explorers and the tribes they encountered illustrates this.
But in the end, knowing that God understands what is beyond our comprehension enables us to live with trust and satisfaction.

Summary: The story of Christ calling forth the dead Lazarus from his tomb and asking others to unbind him and set him free is a symbol of what Christ can do for those entombed by sin. Jesus asks us to help by “rolling the stone away” that keeps others from life and hope. Christ says to us, “Unbind them! Set them free!” |
Summary: The story of the raising of Lazarus gives us hope for the future. Jesus weeps for Lazarus, showing us that he understands the human condition of sorrow and grief. But he also raises Lazarus, and he will raise us out of whatever pains us in this life, because the compassion of Jesus gives us the ultimate hope of eternal life. |
Summary: An old movie and a new novel come together to offer insights into Paul’s letter to the Romans. They move us from an alien invasion to a life of unity and peace. |
Summary: When Jesus heard that his friend Lazarus had died, he did nothing for a few days. Not because he didn’t care but because he saw in this death an opportunity to show his followers more clearly who he is and was. The story is complex and raises lots of good questions.
