Summary: Jesus demonstrates his desire to channel normal currents of human ambition and honor-seeking into vibrant opportunities to fulfill Christian mission and build Christian community. |
Summary: Jesus’ message of love was manifest through a welcoming attitude toward all. Christ’s attitude of inclusivity is one we must model. Too often, we are content to live as we have always lived. We will not bid welcome to new people, ideas or possibilities. Our lack of welcome prevents us from growing. Jesus challenges us to welcome others and to experience through our attitude and actions the reward of eternal life. |

Summary: Jesus calls on us to give support, at least a cup of cold water, to those who come in his name, yet throughout history those who bring the Word of God have often experienced hostility and rejection. Perhaps that is one way we know that God is in our midst, pushing us out of our comfort zones and asking us to consider the true meaning of the good news of Jesus Christ. |
Summary: The image of a cup of cool water offered to a stranger symbolizes our responsibility to offer Christian hospitality. |
Summary: If you have ever been surprised by the sudden appearance of in-laws at the door of your home, you know that hospitality can be a burden. If we never had to serve another turkey dinner or grill steaks on the barbie for guests, it would not bother us in the least. Yet, at some point, we cannot get away from the fact that Jesus encourages us to be welcoming. Fine. Does that mean anything more than simply being polite?
