Summary: We live in this temporary room that we call our body. Jesus has prepared a permanent place for us in his Father’s house. Throughout our life, Jesus is preparing us for that move. Through faith we believe and trust Jesus when he tells us that he is the way to eternal life. Still, some have not yet made reservations for a room. |
Summary: These words, from Jesus to his closest followers in his final days on earth, are words of assurance for any who respond to his life in the world. They are not words of condemnation, meant to divide us into those who are “in” and those who are “out.”

Summary: Our confession of Jesus as God’s Son provides the firm foundation for our faith. |
Summary: The word translated as “heart” in the New Testament does not refer only to feelings but to knowledge. What we feel is true in the message of Jesus is, in fact, rock-bottom truth. Let not your hearts be troubled, therefore. Jesus, who is the way, the truth and the life, leads us along the sure path to witness truthfully and live abundantly, now and forever. |
Summary: Jesus promises that there are many dwelling places “in [the] Father’s house.” Sometimes we think of God’s house as a tiny one, with room for only a chosen few. God desires to expand our understanding and answer the call to spread the good news so that everyone can find their place in the kingdom of God. Along the way, we grow as disciples, and our own “house” expands too. |
Summary: In the face of death, Christians know that nothing, not even death, can separate them from the love of God. The old church cemeteries are visual reminders of that truth. |
Summary: Following Jesus means we have a direction to go, a path to follow that helps us encounter the mystery we call God, and a route that leads us to a specific destination, eternal life. |
Summary: Peggy Lee once sang a song of hopelessness that asked “Is that all there is?” Christians say “No” to that question, for we know that there is more to life than futility, hurt and disappointment. There is a life of wholeness, a life of service and love. There is the companionship of Christ and fellow believers now and great hope in the hereafter. |
Summary: Jesus instructs the disciples about the church’s mission after he leaves. The church keeps his commandments out of love, and draws on the resources of the Advocate. |
Summary: Jesus knew his disciples would not react very well to the news of his departure, so he assured them that he would not leave them twisting in the wind when he left. Instead, he would ask his heavenly Father to leave the Holy Spirit with them, an ever-present Counselor to teach and to guide them as they did the work of advancing the kingdom of God. The Spirit is with us, too. |
Summary: When Jesus was nearing death, he promised that the Holy Spirit would come to the disciples. Jesus would not leave them orphaned. The Spirit is with us today as well, both in our pain and in our joys. |
Summary: More than 70 years ago, “Your Cheatin’ Heart” was released and instantly became a country music classic. Jesus knew something about cheating hearts. In fact, his words to his disciples recorded in today’s text were uttered within days of his betrayal and death. Judas betrayed him in the Garden of Gethsemane and did so with a cheatin’ kiss. And the cheatin’ would continue.

Summary: When Jesus was nearing death, he promised that the Holy Spirit would come to the disciples. Jesus would not leave them orphaned. The Spirit is with us today as well, both in our pain and in our joys. |
Summary: Scrupulous people are never at peace with a decision. They constantly go back to a previous choice and reevaluate it. Not so with God, who is consistent in the work of love. |
Summary: Christians say “No” to the question of "Is that all there is?", because there is more to life than futility, hurt and disappointment. There is a life of wholeness, a life of service and love. There is the companionship of Christ and fellow believers now and great hope in the hereafter. |
Summary: Jesus prepares his disciples for his coming death by reminding them of the centrality of faithful obedience. He also promises that the Father will send the Holy Spirit to serve as a living teacher of the way of Jesus. The result for disciples, including us, is an emboldened resurrection faith. |
Summary: The peace of God is unlike anything the world has to offer. The peace that Jesus offers, through the counseling work of the Holy Spirit, is not an emotion but an under-girding support for our lives. It is not dependent on people or circumstances but comes from Jesus himself. |
Summary: The “other” Judas’ question is our question as much as it was his. And Jesus’ answer to him is our answer as well. How shall we incorporate Jesus’ answer into our life as a church so that it becomes as real for us as it was for our spiritual ancestors, the disciples? |
Summary: Jesus does not want his followers to be known by superficial emotions. Instead, he wants us to go deep, be authentic and put his love into action. |
Summary: The words of John 1:14, “And the Word became flesh and lived among us,” make great poetry, but Jesus lived these words at their grittiest level. Having experienced trauma, Jesus sends an Advocate who brings us peace and empowers us to advocate for and share that peace with others. |
Summary: Jesus sends us out to do ministry in a world that can be anything from hostile to apathetic towards our work. Jesus has sent the Advocate or Holy Spirit to guide and teach us. Despite the problems we might face, Jesus offers us peace. |
Summary: To prepare his disciples for his eventual departure, Jesus told them that three things would characterize their lives while he was gone. First, their motivation to obey God would naturally come out of an ever-increasing love for him. Second, their ability to understand and apply God’s truth would be totally dependent on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. And finally, their hearts would be comforted by a sense of well-being that the world often promises, but can never deliver. |
