Summary: Courage is the key that opens the door to the future that God is seeking to create through God’s people. Sometimes the courage to unleash a movement for God requires only that we take an initial step. But first steps are not always easy. This is particularly true when an element of risk is involved. |

Summary: It’s very easy to abuse holy things ― indeed, to dishonor even God – by making religion into a show that’s intended to impress people. Could anything be more ironical than that we would seek to impress people, rather than giving our undivided attention to God? But if we remember that God himself is our audience, our “show business” will become magnificent worship and magnificent living. |

Summary: Today’s gospel is a difficult text because it seems to be an attack on people outside the church, and thus tempts us to self-righteousness. But the sins that the gospel addresses are found in the church as well. Focusing on little religious details can cover up a lack of obedience to “weightier matters of the law.” In contrast to our desire to exalt ourselves, our attention is called to the Messiah who came to serve. |

Summary: Jesus calls us to live out the words that we preach and teach -- to walk the same walk that we talk. He challenges us to live in equality and humility with one another, not placing one above another, but allowing God to exalt us in accordance with our unassuming and tireless service. |

Summary: Hypocrisy and pride can weigh us down. But if we unpack them from our “suitcase,” we will be able to serve others with a humility that produces true greatness. |

Summary: Genuine, healthy forms of humility derive from spiritual growth that makes us into “good trees.” We become humble out of gratitude for what God has done, and because it brings us true joy.
